FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions)

POWDER APPLICATION PROBLEMS

Poor charging – inadequate powder film thickness or wrap on part or poor coverage

POSSIBLE CAUSES – 01
High voltage source not providing enough KV at charging electrode

SOLUTIONS

  • Check if high voltage source is on Systemically check electrical continuity from voltage source to electrode including cable resistors and fuses.
  • Replace missing or broken electrode.
  • Clean electrode insulated by powder build-up or impact fusion

POSSIBLE CAUSES – 02
Poor ground

SOLUTIONS
Check fround from conveyor rail (or rub bar when used) through hanger to part. All contact areas must be free of powder buildup heavy grease and other insulating materials

POSSIBLE CAUSES – 03
power delivery(feed)rate is too high.

SOLUTIONS
reduce powder delivery rate until material is adequately charged.

POSSIBLE CAUSES – 04
Excessive moisture in powder booth air.

SOLUTIONS
Moisture in humid air will tend to dissipate the charge on the powder particles. Control the humidity in the powder spray area.

POSSIBLE CAUSES – 05
Powder too fine.

SOLUTIONS

  • Maintain consistent blend of virgin and recycled powder.
  • Reduce amount of reclaim added to virgin.

POSSIBLE CAUSES – 06
Powder delivery air too high Powder blowing by part.

SOLUTIONS

Turn down air setting or move gun position farther away from part

Poor penetration - Powder will not coat Faraday cage area (holes, grooves, channels, inside recesses).

POSSIBLE CAUSES
Powder delivery too low

SOLUTIONS

  • Turn up powder delivery.
  • Use gun barrel extension.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
Poor ground.

SOLUTIONS
Check ground.Refer to Section A, Trouble 1, Cause 2.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
Incorrect powder spray pattern

SOLUTIONS

  • Adjust powder spray pattern.
  • Try alternative nozzle selections

POSSIBLE CAUSES
Voltage too high.

SOLUTIONS
Turn voltage setting down so that surfaces closer to the gun do not repel powder from corners

POSSIBLE CAUSES

  • Powder delivery velocity too high
  • Powder delivery velocity too low.

SOLUTIONS

  • Turn air setting down so powder air stream does not blow powder out of corners.
  • Increase air setting to delivery powder into corners.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
Poor gun placement

SOLUTIONS
Adjust gun position so powder could has a direct path to recessed areas.

Back ionization - powder layers are repelled from part.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

  • Voltage too high.
  • Gun positioned too close to part.
  • Poor ground.
  • Excessively heavy powder buildup.

SOLUTIONS

  • Turndown voltage setting.
  • Change gun placement farther away from part.
  • Check ground. Refer to Section A, Trouble 1, Cause 2.
  • Refer to Section A, Trouble 1, Cause 3
